Big Tech Promised Net Zero. Then AI Happened

The Setup: A Straightforward Pledge Meets a Not-So-Straightforward Decade

A few years ago, the biggest tech companies raced to out-pledge each other on climate: net zero by this year, carbon negative by that year, matched by billions in renewable energy purchases. Those commitments were made before generative AI became the industry's central obsession. Now the infrastructure required to train and run AI models — power-hungry data centers running around the clock — is colliding with promises that were never designed to absorb that kind of growth.

The Numbers: Two Companies, Same Direction

Amazon's own sustainability report shows global greenhouse gas emissions rose to 80.8 million metric tonnes in 2025, up from 69.5 million the year before — the company's second consecutive annual increase. More notably, Amazon's operations became more carbon-intensive for the first time since it started tracking the metric in 2019, with emissions per dollar of revenue rising from 109 to 113 grams, meaning emissions grew faster than the business itself.

Google's numbers tell a similar story. The company recently reported that its emissions have climbed 82% since 2019, including an 18% jump in just the past year — despite a public target to cut emissions in half by 2030. Google's chief sustainability officer, Kate Brandt, put the core tension bluntly: the company's AI buildout is accelerating faster than the electric grid is decarbonizing.

Why It's Bigger Than It Looks

This isn't just two companies missing a target. A recent United Nations report found that data centers already consume more electricity than all but ten countries on Earth, making the sector roughly the world's 11th-largest energy consumer, with projections putting AI data centers among the top six sources of global electricity demand by 2030. That scale is why UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres used London Climate Week in June to launch a new AI Environmental Transparency Initiative.

It's also a policy story. Reporting has indicated the European Union is weighing changes to climate rules specifically to make it easier to build new data centers as AI demand grows — and that the European Commission had already agreed to keep individual data centers' environmental impact out of public view, after lobbying from major tech firms.

The Part Nobody Talks About: Nobody's Saying the Buildout Will Slow Down

What's notable in both companies' language is what's missing: neither Amazon nor Google is promising emissions will fall soon. Amazon's chief sustainability officer, Kara Hurst, described the company's climate trajectory as something that won't move in a straight line and won't resolve in a single year — a candid admission that the AI expansion isn't a temporary spike, it's the new baseline.

Conclusion: The Pledges Weren't Wrong, the Assumptions Were

None of this means climate commitments were empty promises. It means they were built on assumptions about growth that AI has since blown past. With Meta and Microsoft's updated sustainability reports still to come this year, the real test isn't whether more companies say the right things about net zero — it's whether any of them can make the curve bend down while still building every data center the AI race seems to demand.
